It would seem Facebook is getting scarier and scarier every day. A new technology is being tested that will place a camera outside a building, which will use your Facebook pictures to recognise you and then check you in and offer you a special deal. Cool, or creepy?
The technology, called Facedeals, is currently being developed in Nashville, Tennessee. Advertising agency Redpepper has developed the technology completely without the help of Facebook, and predict Facedeal to better incentivise check-ins and deals to loyal customers. Redpepper feels that businesses stand to gain from their system, which would encourage owners to have their businesses talked about on the social network, and for regular visitors to be rewarded with special deals for doing so.
The way this works is pretty simple. A business gets a Facedeal camera, which is mounted near the entrance to their establishment. Facebook users then choose to opt-in to the service, which authorises the Facedeal app to scan your facial biometric data from your most recent photographs. As you upload more photos, the recognition will also improve.
As you walk through the door of a Facedeal business, your face is recognised by the camera, and a deal is sent to your phone as you are checked in on Facebook. The people behind the technology have put together a little video, complete with a super creepy voice, to show you how it would work:
I’m not so sure about this. It’s a little weird and creepy, don’t you think? My concern is that it’s most likely going to be scanning every face, whether you’ve decided to opt-in or not. What happens to all that data? Do you really want Zuckerberg to know where you are all the time?
