I’ve chatted to you before about this film. It’s a documentary made in South Africa and I personally believe it could win an Oscar. It went mental at Sundance and tells the tale of Roriguez, the American singer who “was bigger than Elvis in SA,” but didn’t shift more than a handful of albums in the States. Everyone thought he had killed himself on stage (this was before the internet, so no-one realised he was actually alive.) My buddy ‘Sugar’ from Mabu vinyl gave me a screening – he has a copy because he’s involved in it – you’ll see he narrates most of the thing. It’s so Goddamn good. Watch the trailer and you might get a tear in your eye.
It launches in SA on 24 August – at Ster-Kinekor.
