It’s been a particularly cold winter this year, and the cold front that’s just hit the entire country brought a massive chill along with it. Whilst the weather service is not bringing us any good news with regards to the temperatures, a rare thing happened last night. It snowed. And boy did it snow.
Snow during winter is not uncommon in South Africa, but is unprecedented on the scale experienced by the country last night. Heavy snow fell in three provinces: Gauteng, Free State and Kwazulu Natal, as well as parts of the Karoo.
In Gauteng, the areas most affected were in Vaal and Vereeniging, although eyewitnesses have also reported light snowfall this morning in the suburbs of Illovo, Auckland Park and Parktown. The weather service has advised that the extreme cold last night should be over and that temperatures should be warming up from today.
According to reports, KZN has been the hardest hit by the weather, covering much of the interior of the province. This includes the Midlands area, Howick, Underberg and Kokstad. The N3 has not been affected. Michaelhouse has been covered in a massive white blanket.
The Free State also saw its share of powder, when Bloemfontein announced snowfall last night. The event has been described as “the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to our town.”
Check out the gallery below of pics submitted by News24 users, showing the massive spread of snow across the country. Pictures are from places as far apart as Michaelhouse, Vereeniging, Queenstown, Underberg and Vaal. Crazy. You can view the full gallery on News24.
