US broadcast network NBC has received a lot of criticism for its broadcast of the Olympics so far. This has included its choice of camera work and editing, as well as delaying the coverage of events and only broadcasting them during primetime. Coverage of the women’s waterpolo between Spain and USA, which was streamed live on NBC’s website, provides a good argument for a delayed broadcast.
The broadcaster cut to its underwater camera to catch an attack by US polo player Kami Craig, pulling back the swimsuit of a Spanish player and exposing her breast. The commentator mentions that “[y]ou see a lot of suit grabbing going on underwater,” before falling quiet while waiting for the camera to return.
The exposure only lasted a few seconds, but this was more than enough to get Twitter talking, with one user commenting:
I don’t think that’s legal to see a girls boob fully exposed on the tv during an olympic water polo game.. #wtf there are families watching
Another user reacted a lot more favourably:
Just saw a boob on the Olympics. Womens water polo is awesome!!
Breast exposure in women’s waterpolo is apparently extremely common, while a term even exists for an exposed ass: “white tailed deer.”
The match came to a draw of nine points each, four of which were scored by the US’s Craig.
