That headline is not a joke. Last weekend, an elderly nun broke into a nuclear facility Oak Ridge, Tennessee as part of an anti-nuclear protest. The daring feat force the US government to shut down one of its “most sensitive nuclear weapons sites” and seriously reassess is security measures.
Sister Megan Rice, along with accomplices Greg Boertje, 57 , and Michael Walli, 63, cut through fences, slipped past security guards and eluded security to throw human blood on the walls of the nuclear facility. Although officials claim that the nuclear material was never at risk, the entire facility had to be shut down on Wednesday so that security officials could figure out how the supposedly impenetrable defenses were breached.
“You have to be a little bit concerned when it’s an octagenarian nun who helps you understand your nuclear weakness in security,” said Michael O’Hanlon of the Brookings Institute.
The trio were arrested early on Saturday morning and offered security guards bread when they were being taken into custody.
[It is] the most secure facility in the world for storing this kind of material.
They are very lucky they didn’t get shot,” said Steven Wyatt, a spokesman for the complex.
However, he conceded that “[t]he security response could have been a lot better.”
