You remember that painting, don’t you? Well, Brett Murray’s Hail to the Thief exhibition remained up, right up until last month. When he moved out, it was naturally time for a new artist. This time around, Kendell Geers has moved in, with a tribute to the controversial penis painting.
His exhibition, entitled Songs of Innocence and of Experience, is his first solo exhibition in Johannesburg since 2003. At the opening last night, Geers made no bones as to his intentions stating that he is an artist, not a politician and wishes to defend the freedom of expression.
The exhibition of work consists mostly of sculpture, including two bronze penises, which Geers says is cast from his own form. These casts were accompanied by an essay written by the artist entitled ‘Much ado about nothing’ which suggests South Africans should respect their body parts and each other.
The artist also smeared a black and red mural against one of gallery, in commentary on the vandalism that befell “The Spear.”
