With Nelson Mandela Boulevard, Christiaan Barnard Street and Helen Suzman, it’s easy to get confused in Cape Town. More street name changes are currently in the works for the mother city, with a list of 24 proposed changes submitted to Mayor Patricia De Lille.
19 000 Capetownians have participated in the renaming process, which I was clearly not made aware of since this is the first I’m hearing of it.
Changes include Hendrick Verwoerd Drive near Bellville being renamed to Uys Krige Road and Vanguard Drive possibly getting renamed to Dullah Omar Drive.
Other suggestions, which have not yet been approved, include Coen Steytler in the CBD to be changing to Walter Sisulu, as well as a proposal that Modderdam Road become Robert Sobukwe Road. These will still need to be approved by the mayor’s office.
Once Patricia de Lille has made her decision on the new names, the list will be submitted to council for final approval. Best get ready to update your TomTom.
