A major rescue operation on Sunday saw 41 people trapped on the Butha Buthe Pass en route to Afri-Ski and the Oxbow Lodge, in Lesotho, brought to safety.
Paramedics from ER24 assessed the incident scene that stretched over 1,5km. Several people had mild hypothermia or were dehydrated. One of the patients was a diabetic and needed urgent assistance as his medication was running out. Another was treated for asthma on the scene. A heavily pregnant woman and a child with croup were also assessed.
SA tourists had to use their cars as temporary shelters until emergency vehicles arrived and the link road to the resort only re-opened yesterday afternoon.
In related news, in the aftermath of persistent rains and snow in the Eastern Cape, two people are still missing, and another has been confirmed drowned. Clean-up operations and rebuilding homes have begun in earnest.
