The clampdown on drunken driving is in full swing, and the provincial traffic department is currently in negotiations with the police to initiate on-the-spot blood testing at roadblocks. This will provide solid and immediate evidence for prosecution.

Several challenges exist in implementing this new idea. Blood can only be drawn after a police docket has been opened, and a mobile unit with a nurse would be required on the scene.

The Western Cape Provincial Government is currently underway with a massive road safety campaign, which has already seen the confiscation of mobile phones. On the spot blood testing will be another tool in the enforcement of road safety.

Transport MEC Robin Carlisle says he wants the testing implemented as soon as possible.
