Rescue workers at the scene of a horrific accident involving a train and a truck in Mpumalanga are having a hard time determining the extent of the damages. Officials say that identifying bodies is proving difficult as many have been torn up by the impact, with some being thrown as far as 200m.
The accident occurred earlier this morning, when the driver of a truck carrying local farm workers is believed to have misjudged a level crossing and was hit by a freight train en route to Mazambique, carrying coal. The truck was dragged 200m by the train, scattering body parts.
At this stage, Eyewitness News is reporting 19 people dead, and another 25 injured. Four of the injured are reported as being in a very critical condition.
No derailment of the train occured.
