Have you ever been so hungry that you could steal food from a pride of 15 hungry lions? No? Me neither. But for a couple of chaps north of our border it’s common practice. Click through for the sweat-inducing how-to video.
Known as kleptoparasitism, stealing food from another animal’s kill is fairly commonplace in the animal kingdom and usually occurs between apex predators like lions, hyenas and cheetahs. Which makes sense because those animals are naturally built for such things, and they don’t bother with things like logic. For humans it’s a different story, unless of course your one of a number of villagers from Cameroon, and other African states, who regularly partake in the seemingly ridiculous practice.
In theory it seems simple enough, some of your buddies distract the lions long enough for you to sneak in and snatch their kill. In practice though it’s slightly more complicated, mostly because you’re stealing from lions. Hungry, African lions. The King of the Jungle. Once you’ve gotten over that, all you’ll need are unshakable nerves and the confidence of Bieber while approaching a flock of teens.
As awesome as it all looks, it could be causing some serious issues in the animal kingdom and conservationists are concerned that it may be contributing to dwindling number of lions in Africa.
“We believe that the impact of this kind of behaviour might be significant on lion populations, since lions have to spent an enormous energy effort to capture the same amount of prey, if their prey gets stolen. This may have a serious impact on a lion population which is already under serious stress by human encroachment and may eventually contribute to more rapid extinction,” said Hans de Iongh of Leiden University.
Humans displacing lions is a scary fact, and as badass as kleptoparasitism may seem, it may usher in the extinction of lions in the wild.
