Only one South African film has made the shortlist of the Louis Vuitton Journeys Awards, and that film was made in Cape Town by Genevieve Akal, department head of 2ovTV and Harry Haddon, 2oceansvibe scribe and wine specialist. This is the second time the awards have taken place, and requires young film makers to make a short, three to five minute film with no dialogue, interpreting the manifesto that Louis Vuitton gives to hopeful entrants. And can do your patriotic duty, by VOTING HERE.
The pair killed it with their road trip styled film, detailing the crossroads of the main character, David, as he is forced to make a life changing decision while coming to terms with his past. The film was shot in one day in and around Riebeek Kasteel.
The concept for film came about when Genevieve was asked to shoot a music video for Sonofold, the Munich/Durban/Los Angeles based outfit, for their single “Come Back David”. Remember Perez? Well Nic Olsen from Perez now rocks out for Sonofold. After listening to the song and reading the call to entry for Journeys Awards, Akal and Haddon realised they were on to something.
So instead of creating the far too typical South African music video that features a band playing instruments in heavily-sequined Truworths jeans, they made a short film with a strong story. It kicks ass.
Their hard work is done, and now need your help to win the People’s Choice Award, which is decided by a public vote. The voting has opened, and continues from now until 3 September. You can vote once a day.
