Police are currently on the hunt for a group of thieves that have made of with a box containing about 70 grenades. The grenades were stolen from a delivery bakkie in Hammanskraal near Pretoria. The explosives were being transported from Cape Town.
The delivery, bound for Wallmansthal Military Base, left the Cape Town-based subsidiary of Denel yesterday. The driver and his assistant reached a petrol station on the N1 north at approximately 5AM this morning. As deliveries could only be accepted after 8AM, the two drivers decided on a nap instead.
It is believed the two boxes of grenades, each containing 35 grenades each, were stolen while the drivers were asleep. Also reported missing from the scene is two boxes of laundry powder, which was stolen from a nearby cargo truck.
