Earlier this week, we reported on the Khoisan community proposing we change Cape Town’s name to //Hui !Gaeb. Yesterday, a billboard showcasing the new name was erected at the Castle. This was followed by a performance by members of the Khoisan community.
The meaning of the new name created by the Institute for the Restoration of the Aborigines is “Where The Clouds Come Together.” The institute’s Tanya Kleinhans said they want recognition for their Khoisan rights.
The Khoisan have now taken it upon themselves to restore the name of Cape Town which to //Hui !Gaeb. At the same time, the community also called for two of its most important cultural days to be recognised by government.
The two important cultural days she is referring to is actually the entire month of September, as well as the first of January. Khoisan leader Hennie van Wyk is pushing for it to be renamed from “New Year’s Day” to “Kingdom Day”.
The Khoisan is one of several religious and cultural organisations participating in public hearings on the Public Holidays Act. Read more about the meetings here. If everyone gets what they want at these hearings, all of us could score a total of FIVE new public holidays. Hold thumbs!
Here is a video of the performance yesterday:
