So hey, we’ve had a pretty cool look at the future thanks to Google’s I/O Keynote yesterday – where they covered the new Nexus 7 tablet, the Nexus Q media orb, and the awesome, skydiving-filled Project Glass demonstration that you’re really, really going to want to watch, after the jump.
I mean look, the new Nexus tablet and the Android 4.1 update that comes with it (called Jelly Bean) is cool, and the Nexus Q is a pretty neat device for pulling content from YouTube and the Google Play music app, to let you stream music and video. And it doubles as an amplifier.
But the Google Glasses are the really, really cool thing here.
Sergey Brin rushed onstage during his keynote with the (admittedly dorky) glasses strapped to his head, streaming the above video feed from four skydivers through Google Hangouts to the attendees at the conference center. Then he switched the feed to bikers who were hanging out on the conference center’s rooftop, who did a couple of ramps and stuff before cycling into the arena, right up to Brin. And then Brin used his glasses to snap a photo of the crew.
In terms of what the glasses are actually there for, they seem to be kind of like a smartphone for your face. There’s a “powerful” CPU, whatever that means, along with an accelerometer, mic for voice commands, speaker, and a camera; there’s talk of the device being able to overlay with Google Maps, too, so you can have the transparent display point you in the right direction. If you want.
I mean yes it’s entirely possible that the geeky-looking glasses will be laughable in a couple of year’s time, along with Brin’s hopes for the glasses’ eventual functionality – documentation, a search result medium, a real-time dashboard or form for interactive communication – but right now they look kind of awesome.
Developers at the I/O conference got to pre-order Project Glass for $1,500, set for mid-2013 delivery.
