A Cape Town woman has accused four members of New Zealand’s under-20 team, the Baby Blacks, of gang rape at the Southern Sun Hotel Newlands on Friday night.
According to staff at the hotel, a 22-year old woman entered the hotel on Friday evening, after the Baby Blacks had lost to the Baby Boks at Newlands stadium. She entered under the pretense of visiting her cousin but had clearly been in contact with the rugby players earlier on as she knew exactly in which rooms to find them. What happened after that is still under investigation.
“I think she lives near the hotel. According to some of my colleagues she was apparently drunk. And on Saturday morning she called her parents to fetch her at the hotel after claims that she was raped.
“Her parents insisted on opening a case of rape. We are not certain that she was raped, but there was blood found on a sheet on a bed. The rugby players left the hotel at 12am on Saturday,” said a staff member.
Police spokesperson Col Vish Naidoo confirmed on Sunday that unit had been called in on Saturday, following a complaint from the unidentified woman.
“I can confirm that a woman claimed that she was raped at the hotel,” he said. “The victim could not tell detectives who raped her because she couldn’t remember anything about the incident.”
The New Zealand team and management cooperated fully with the investigation and no one was detained.
“The team and team management cooperated fully and assisted police with their enquiries, after which police advised they were happy for all team members to travel out of South Africa,” said a spokesperson for the New Zealand ministry of foreign affairs and trade.
