This is a little silly, but definitely worth a watch, even if it is just to hear how genuinely excited Coulthard gets when he catches the ball.
The former F1 ace perfectly steered a Mercedes Roadster to collect the ball after golf pro Jake Shepherd smashed it 275m off a tee. And in doing so the duo set a new Guinness World Record for the “furthest golf shot caught in a moving car.” While this maybe one of the most idiotic records in the good book, the Guinness Book of Records is a pop-cultural bible, and the law that it works by is that any record broken immediately becomes news. In fact, it is the perfect book for advertisers looking to make viral videos. It’s easy: Find record, insert product and celebrity, break record, put on YouTube.
The Sun spoke to Coulthard:
The telly racing pundit, 41, said the hardest part was slowing the car down as the ball ran out of pace. He explained: “The timing of it is the tricky thing. The ball will go off at an amazing speed but loses energy. The skillful bit is matching up.”
They also quoted Executive Creative Director, Jeremy Garner, from the digital agency Weapon7 who said: “The sheer speed of the SLS AMG Roadster, together with the skills of David Coulthard and Jake Shepherd, made this an exciting idea that only Mercedes-Benz could achieve.” This is patently false. Many other cars could have done it, their agencies are just not up to the same page as you in the Guinness Book of Records, Jeremy.
