Get ready to moan about how much sportspeople make. Forbes on Tuesday released its list of the 100 highest paid athletes, boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., nicknamed “Money,” is in the top spot with earnings of $85 million. He is a solid 23 million ahead of second placed Manny Pacquiao, and miles ahead of the only South African on the list, Ernie Els, who is in 91st place with earnings of $17,4 million.
Mayweather’s celebrations will be slightly muted, as he is currently sitting behind bars for domestic battery. What a douche. It’s also infuriating that he only fought twice during the past 12 months, and spent less than one hour in the ring. Now while boxers do have to put in an insane amount of training, $42,5 million for two fights is kind of crazy, and makes footballers’ salaries seem almost reasonable.
Despite his recent troubles, Tiger Woods is still doing OK with earnings of $59,4 million that sees him in third place, the first time since 2001 he hasn’t topped the list. What’s crazy is that this is half of what he was earning in 2009. The top woman is Maria Sharapova with total earnings of $27,9 million and is in 26th position. There are only two cricketers on the list; in 31st place is Mahendra Singh Dhoni with earnings of $26,5 million, and Sachin Tendulkar with $18,6 million in 78th place.
Only 11 different sports are represented in the list with American football taking the biggest slice with 30 players.
