The Commission for the Protection and Promotion of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities plans public meetings this month in Gauteng, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State. The meetings relate to the revision of public holidays, in particular Christian holy days. This follows “complaints and requests” it has received that the present public holidays recognise Christians and unfairly discriminate against other religions.
The argument is made that, whilst Christians get to have a day off from work for their holidays such as Christmas and Easter, followers of other religions have to physically take a day’s leave for their sacred days.
The aim of the meetings is to encourage public participation and collate information to determine whether the current situation is discriminatory.
According to its mandate, we received a number of complaints concerning the biased and unfair scheduling of the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994.
