He’s at it again. Louis Theroux has dived back into the hornet’s nest of the American porn industry 15 years after his intial foray. What he has found is that an industry that used to make billions is now fighting for survival, as so much free pornography is available online. Things have got to a point where Theroux says that pornography is now simply advertising for prostitution.
The finances are so bad in the industry that prostitution has become “widespread”, and for many “performers” pornography is simply “advertising for their real business” of having sex with private clients. The Telegraph quotes Theroux as saying “the arrival of free YouTube-style porn sites meant that consumers could download pirated scenes from the vast backlog of old content for free”.
He said performers make more money having sex behind closed doors rather than on screen, and that “it’s an open secret in the porn world that many female performers are supplementing their income. It’s called ‘doing privates'”.
The new documentary goes out in Britain this Sunday. One wonders, though, how many people are going to download it.
