Owing to what is arguably one of the more bizarre printing faux pas in cartoon history, Donald Duck has found himself embroiled in a Nazi-related scandal after an old comic book story was republished in Germany, featuring the word ‘Holocaust’ instead of ‘Congratulations’.

In the German translation of the story, a cohort of Donald Duck’s addresses the Duckburg fire brigade, ending his enthusiastic speech with the word ‘Holocaust’. This has been blacked out by hand by the publishers, and replaced with the German word for ‘Congratulations’ – but not before the Disney comic came under attack for apparently trivialising the Nazis.

In fact, the original story – published in 1972 – did feature a reference to ‘holocaust’, which illustrator Carl Barks used as a synonym for blazing fire. Presumably the Mickey Mouse creators did not bank on the republished German version sparking a public outcry about the political leanings of Donald Duck and his peers.

A new corrected version of the comic will be released this week.
