It’s the world’s most watched annual sporting event. Tomorrow is the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final. Bayern Munich vs Chelsea. Germany vs England. We won’t go further than that. Do that in your own mind.
At 20h45 South African time, the English and German giants will do battle in the colourful Allianz Arena, north of Munich.
This is arguably the biggest game ever for Chelsea; in addition to the trophy, their Champions League qualification for next season hinges on winning, having finished sixth in the English Premier League.
But what are the facts? Let’s take a look, my friends.
Bayern have won the Champions League four times, Chelsea none.
Bayern is missing three of their top players, and this could leave gaping holes in Bayern’s tactical plans.
Chelsea is missing four top players; amongst them, John Terry, and Ramires, who was recently voted Chelsea’s Players’ Player of the Season.
In their last meeting, in the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, the Blues prevailed 6-5 on aggregate against Bayern.
Hmmm. Terrifically spicy vibes.
Jupp Heynckes, Bayern’s manager, believes they have a “little advantage” as UEFA Champions League final hosts, but is equally aware of the threat of a “dangerous” and rampant Chelsea.
Chelsea’s manager, Roberto Di Matteo, hopes home advantage will work against Bayern as he scents a “great opportunity” for Chelsea to make history in tomorrow’s final. Good luck with that reverse psychology, Bob.
And in terms of momentum, both teams will be flexing their pecks and wagging their swag. Chelsea trumped Barcelona on their road to the final; Bayern took down Real Madrid.
