A picture of a previous SA Roadlink Accident, taken outside KZN in 2006
An SA Roadlink bus has overturned just outside of Bloemfontein, killing five people and leaving another 25 seriously injured. The bus itself was less than a week old, and had two drivers on board. It was travelling from Cape Town to Johannesburg.
One passenger saw how another’s leg was ripped off in the trauma of the accident, as well as how another passenger lost his hand. The bus overturned when it veered off the road. The most likely possibility for this happening is the driver falling asleep behind the wheel, although an official cause is still to be found. The driver was one of the seriously injured.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation has opened an investigation into the crash, which will hopefully shed some light on what exactly went wrong. The Road Accident Fund has also been approached to provide victims with financial relief.
A spokesperson at the hospital has said that most of the people involved in the accident were “highly traumatised.”
