Only one in five people support what Julius Malema says and does. A survey among 2 000 metropolitan adults, conducted in April 2012 (before the disgraced ANC Youth League leader was expelled from the ANC), revealed that overall, Juju’s backing from the public – particularly from young people – is nothing to write home about.
Significantly, among the 18-24 year age group, approval for Malema has dropped from 26 per cent in 2001 to 21 per cent. In other age groups, support has risen slightly – most notably from 13 per cent to 19 per cent among 35 to 59 year-olds, and from seven to 14 per cent amongst 50 to 59 year-olds. Still, no great shakes.
When asked to agree or disagree with the statement, “I support what Julius Malema says and does”, black respondents were 27 per cent in favour, while there was just eight, five and six per cent support from white, coloured, and Indian/Asian respondents respectively.
What does this mean? Who knows. But the results suggest that Juju is going to have to re-assess his actions and statements if he’s ever going to win enough favour to become President, which he told us so vociferously yesterday he intends.
