Lady Gaga has been denied a permit to perform in Indonesia next month, owing to security concerns. This follows Islamic groups in the country having voiced their concerns over the pop star’s ‘vulgar’ on-stage performance style. The 30 000 people who have bought tickets to her June concert in Jakarta will be disappointed.
Indonesia is a secular state, but is home to the world’s largest population of Muslims and a number of hardline Islamic groups. Salim Alatas, the Jakarta head of the Islamic Defender Front (FPI), says that what Lady Gaga represents is “dangerous”.
He also summed up his organisation’s objections to the the singer quite neatly, as follows:
“She’s a vulgar singer who wears only panties and a bra when she sings and she stated she is the envoy of the devil’s child and that she will spread satanic teaching.”
The FPI and two other Islamic groups have succeeded in having the Lady Gaga concert on 3 June stopped, police confirmed today.
