A vintage 1923 Leica camera went under this hammer this weekend, and shattered the record previously set for a camera. The auction was held at the Galerie Westlicht in Vienna, with the camera being sold to a buyer who has chosen to remain anonymous. But exactly how much did it go for?
The camera sold for €2,16 million, including the required sales tax. This final price blew away the estimates of experts, who put the value of the camera at between €600 000 – €800 000. The hammer fell at €1,8 million.
The camera is a Leica 0-series, one of 25 prototypes released to test the market for 35mm in the early 1920’s. Less than half of the 25 original prototypes remain in existence in today, with only 12 known models still kicking around. Full production of the 0-series began in 1925.
The previous record auction price for a camera was €1,32 million, also for a Leica 0-series.
