This is a little embarrassing for the Russian police. A Russian blogger recently decided to try a little experiment – he took a replica AK-47, hung it around his neck, and walked through the centre of Moscow to see if anything would happen. Not one police officer stopped him.
Pavel Tarasov took to the streets to see if he could elicit a reaction from Russian police – but nothing. No one even came up to question him. A friend of his came along for the stroll, and even managed to get a picture of him standing next to a police officer.
His experiment came after police subdued low-key crowds following the celebration of Victory Day, most of them wearing white ribbons as a sign of opposition. Many such protestors have been detained as political offenders. Tarasov came to the following conclusion with his experiment:
My conclusion is that the police is more interested in rooting out political protest instead of carrying out its direct responsiblities. And that is not the fault of the police, but the people in charge of the country.
