The first part of the Olympics happened this morning, which saw the lighting of the Olympic torch in Ancient Olympia in Greece. This marks the start of the 78 day torch relay to the Olympic Stadium. Where will the torch be traveling this year?

The Olympic Torch will spend the next week traveling through Greece, before arriving in Cornwall on May 18th. The relay will then travel through the United Kingdom for 70 days, being carried by over 8000 members of the public and celebrities before lighting the main cauldron in the London Olympic Stadium to mark the official start of the games.

The first leg of the relay was run this morning by Greek swimming world champion, Spyros Gianniotis. He ran the torch through the Ancient Olympia Stadium, before passing it to 19 year-old Alex Loukos.

The torch is lit in a centuries-old ceremony, which uses the sun’s rays to create flame. This is then used to light to torch.
