Fancy embossed invitations to attend a preview of The Dictator, Sacha Baron Cohen’s new film, are being sent around Washington D.C. – ostensibly from “President Robert Mugabe and the Ministry of Education, Sport, Art, and Culture.” Zimbabwe’s art ministry has assured reporters that it hasn’t come from them.
I mean, The Dictator hits theatres in a week, so this is just the latest iteration of Baron Cohen’s in-character promotion – recall his spilling ‘Kim Jong-Il’s ashes’ on Ryan Seacrest during the Oscars – but whatever, any advertising that messes with Mugabe is fun advertising.
Sadly, the Washington Post followed up and the event isn’t actually happening at the Presidential Residence in Harare. Shocker. The Zimbabwean ministry didn’t even know that the film existed until just about now.
Nice job, Cohen.
