When you’re a student, popping out to the shops in your slippers is not a crime. In some sleepy SA beach towns, it’s positively de rigueur. But when you’re in military uniform, this is a big fat no-no. SA Air Force Lt-Col Ruth Ndayi is currently facing disciplinary charges for wearing pink slippers to a Pretoria shopping mall, while dressed in military regalia.
A colleague took this cell phone photo of Ruth wearing the fluffy accessories to the shops with her uniform, and sent it to the Air Force for comment. (Quite sneaky to tell tales like that, but clearly this is a massive deal.)
Just shopping. In my slippers.
Military personnel have slated Ndayi’s behaviour as a “scandalous embarrassment”, with one colleague pointing out it is “unacceptable for a soldier to bring the entire Air Force into disrepute through such undisciplined behaviour”.
To compound matters, Ndayi failed to show up at her scheduled disciplinary hearing at the right time – she arrived an hour early, and then did not return again after being told to come back at the correct time. Poor Ruth – maybe she just prefers shopping to being in the Air Force? Has anyone thought of that?
