The movie “Borat” didn’t exactly do well in Kazakhstan. After being banned, it took a full six years to realise the touristic potential of the film, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. But, the “glorious nation” has now issued an official thank you to Sacha Baron Cohen.
The Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan has revealed that visa applications to visit Kazakhstan have increased ten-fold, and that the film has done a lot to put the country on the map. Tourism has greatly increased into the area, largely in thanks to the mockumentary.
Let’s not forget the recent incident at an Olympic Qualifier in Kuwait, where the Kazakh shooting team had to listen to the spoof anthem from the movie, included such great lyrics as: “Kazakhstan’s prostitutes cleanest in the region.”
One can only hope that happens in London later this year.
