The driver of the blue light vehicle which knocked Thomas Ferreira off his motorcycle last year will be criminally prosecuted. The case will be of particular interest to Ferreira’s family, who nursed Thomas through a coma of several weeks and a slow and costly rehabilitation following the accident.
Joseph Modomai Semietjie was behind the wheel of the BMW X5 which collided with Ferreira on 5 November 2011. Semietjie was transporting Gauteng local government and housing MEC, Humphrey Mmemezi that day, and allegedly jumped a red traffic light, causing the accident.
In addition to the criminal charges, the driver will also face internal disciplinary hearings from tomorrow.
Meanwhile Ferreira’s family faces medical expenses which have to date not been covered by the Gauteng provincial government, despite premier Nomvula Mokonyane’s public promise that the province would foot the bill.
