Google’s long-anticipated cloud storage service, Google Drive, is set to launch some time next week – in yet another attempt to move in on a service that other companies have been occupying for years. What’s interesting here is that Google is planning on starting everyone with 5GB of free storage, easily trumping Dropbox’s 2GB base quota.
Dropbox being the cloud storage service of choice for those of us who don’t like lugging external hard drives around everywhere we go – or emailing attachments to ourselves.
True, Dropbox makes it easy to scale up to 23GB with payed upgrades, but as an initial offering Google Drive looks to be plenty competitive – even if they’ll just end up giving all your data to the American Supreme Court.
There are some concerns with how well Google Drive will work on Macs, too – it’s an installable application, much like Dropbox, and not just a free-floating online folder. In any case: some time next week, Google is giving you 5 GB of free storage. Feel free to upload those hi-res videos now.
