Someone somewhere in the Jeffrey’s Bay woke up with a hangover and a fake horn
The owners and employees of Lombardini Game Lodge near Jeffrey’s Bay in the Eastern Cape were left somewhere between surprise, anger and hilarity when they arrived at work yesterday to discover that one of the lodge’s precious (though not living) inhabitants had been brutally attacked overnight.
A burglar had broken into the lodge’s bar on Sunday night, probably in search of money, and finding none, had helped himself to the stock. Then it appears he attacked the fibreglass statue of a rhino called Barendina that stands outside on the lawn, sawing off the fibreglass horn, and making off with it.
Lodge co-owner Susan Lottering says she called the police to lay a charge of theft, but did not mention the damage to the rhino, lest the charge attract complaints.
Her partner, Johan Lottering said the damage to Barendina was significant, and that it would have to be replaced.
“There’s no hope of rehabilitation,” he told Beeld.
