Cue mass hysteria, Twitter has officially confirmed what many have suspected for some time, there’s a bug that causes twitter users to randomly unfollow people. It’s doubtful whether society will be able to function normally without their precious social media and in all likelihood this is the first sign of the impending apocalypse.
Recently, a Twitter spokesperson confirmed that the microblogging site is indeed experiencing technical difficulties,
“This is a bug, and our team is working to fix it.”
While they are working towards a solution, Twitter has set up a support page to aid those who are suffering from Social Media withdrawal. TechCrunch’s Jeremiah Owyang also whipped together a guide dedicated to Coping With Twitter’s Unfollow Bug. In it he wrote,
“I wonder how many businesses, personal, and casual relationships are strained by the bug haphazardly unfollowing. It causes us to give pause and question the stability of the Twitter infrastructure, usage of my personal data and social network, and what important messages I may have missed from my trusted Twitter network.”
How Owang and the countless others have continued to carry on with their daily lives without reliable Twitter accounts remains a mystery.
In a completely unsurprising and unoriginal move, some of those affected have taken to Twitter to express their concerns.
Labour MP and fanatic tweeter, Tom Watson, tweeted “I thought I was doing something wrong.”
Adam Rifkin, the co-founder of a conversation website Pandwhale, tweeted, “Is it me or has Twitter’s unfollow bug been going on for a while? Why is this such a hard bug to fix?”
While Janet Davis, an art and design historian, posted: “Twitter’s always done it. [It’s] worse in recent weeks.”
There are unconfirmed rumours that those at the head of the site are acquiring messenger pigeons en masse, which will be used in a retrograde update to keep frantic Tweeters connected.
