Stacey broke down in court as the magistrate passed sentence.
A Welsh university student has been jailed for 56 days for a “racially-aggravated public order offence” after making offensive tweets about Bolton Wanderers player Fabrice Muamba, who collapsed with heart failure during a FA cup tie with Tottenham Hotspur on March 17.
Moments after Muamba collapsed to the field suffering a series of cardiac arrests, Liam Stacey took to his Twitter account with this sleaze:
LOL, Fuck Muamba. He’s dead
Twitter being what it is, within minutes, he was deluged with outraged responses criticising his post. Undeterred, he let forth a vile fountain of abuse against the respondents.
Stacey deleted his offensive tweets, but thanks to clever YouTubers, you can see a video copy of his Twitter stream starting from his most recent abject apologies back to the really nasty comments he sent flinging at his detractors after his first attack on Muamba. As you might expect, very ugly language ahead, so proceed with caution!
Police were inundated with complaints as members of the public, former soccer player Stan Collymore among them, reported the student’s comments. Other players like Les Ferdinand immediately called for Stacey to be banned from Twitter altogether. Last week Stacey, an undergraduate at Swansea University, admitted inciting racial hatred when he appeared at Swansea Magistrates’ Court, and he was sentenced today. He claimed he was drunk when the tweets were sent, but not before attempting to claim that his account had been hacked.
As for Fabrice Muamba, he is still in a serious condition in hospital, but has been described as “stable”. It is unknown when he will be able to return to football, if at all.
