First it was Zara, and now another major standalone retailer has come to SA. GAP will be opening it’s doors to South Africa this week, with stores in Sandton City and Tygervalley. Previously, only Banana Republic was available as a part of Stuttafords.
GAP and Zara both form part of the the Spanish clothing conglomerate Inditex, which has stated that it wishes to use South Africa as it’s foot in the door to Sub-Saharan Africa. The company has stated that it’s stand-alone stores would be run locally by Stuttafords.
This provides competition for other already established retailers, such as Wooltru Holdings, Foschini and The Platinum Group. The current surge of foreign retailers is largely based on Africa’s positive growth prospects, which projects consumer spending to significantly increase by 2020.
More GAP stores are planned to follow.
