Yesterday we brought you the news of the massive bus accident that has Switzerland and Belgium reeling. Reports have emerged today that one of the survivors of the crash is an 11-year-old South African girl, named Andrea Hoebrechts. She is in critical condition.
The daughter of former Bloemfontein doctor Hanani Pienaar, young Andrea is now bravely fighting for her life in a hospital in Berne. The little girl was one of 24 survivors of the bus accident which took 28 lives. The death toll included 22 school children and six teachers, who were all returning home from a skiing trip in Val d’Anniviers in the Swiss Alps.
All survivors had to be airlifted to hospital in military helicopters. Andrea will have to undergo surgery and is suffering serious injury and concussion.
Our thoughts are with her whole family, and with all the other families who have been impacted by the tragic accident.
