Last week, director James Cameron found the one spot where people wouldn’t ask him about the Avatar sequel – 8km beneath the ocean, off the coast of Papua New Guinea, in a specially designed submarine. He’ll be repeating the trick later this month at the ocean’s deepest point to shoot footage for a couple of documentaries.
The first trip in his sub – the “Deepsea Challenger” – broke the world depth record for solo undersea travel, because apparently Cameron can only sustain himself by breaking as many records as possible. If he manages the trip down to the Mariana Trench, he’ll be the second person to have ever done it – the last time it happened was in 1960, when the vehicle barely survived. And that one didn’t have any fabulously wealthy directors in it.
What is pretty cool is that you can follow Cameron’s voyage at this website, while Cameron films the whole thing for two eventual 3D documentaries in partnership with National Geographic.
You may now choose between a Titanic, Abyss or Avatar 2 joke.
