Earlier this week, 2oceansVibe reported that possible charges of fraud were to be brought against Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Zondwa Mandela. We can now confirm that charges have been laid against him, as well as an Aurora Empowerment Systems lawyer, who also happens to be a director of Velvet Sky Aviation.
Gauteng police spokesman, Neville Malaila, confirmed that charges had been laid by Pamodzi Gold liquidators on Tuesday:
We are currently investigating the matter and then we will decide whether to make arrests or not.
There were rumblings that President Jacob Zuma’s nephew, Khulubuse Zuma, was also to be charged, but it appears he has managed to escape for now.
One of the liquidators, Johan Engelbrecht, explained that for now, Mandela was to be charged because he was the managing director, and “we [the liquidators] feel that Mandela is liable.”
The other individual charged, Ahmed Amod, an Aurora Empowerment Systems lawyer, is also a director of the embattled local airline, Velvet Sky Aviation.
The charges are based on the “apparent manipulation of Amod’s trust account in the transaction between Aurora and Labat Limited.”
The transaction was allegedly used to finance the acquisition of Pamodzi Gold assets.
The Liquidators say the directors of Aurora will also face civil claims amounting to R1,7 billion by Pamodzi Gold, who were the original owners of Orkney and Grootvlei mines.
