Radio presenter Gareth Cliff was arrested last night after being pulled over for speeding. He was caught driving 182km an hour in a 120km/h zone on the R21 in Lyttelton, said Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo. He was later released and did not spend last night in jail.
In an interview on 5fm this morning, Cliff admitted to speeding, but said it was merely because he was tired and in a hurry to get home:
I went to Durban yesterday for the Idols auditions. When I got back to Joburg, I was tired and just wanted to get home. I didn’t even realise I was going that fast. I admit that I was wrong and that it was completely stupid. I have to begrudgingly congratulate the police however on a job well done. Not once did I feel unsafe after being pulled off, and I also received no preferential treatment. To those on Twitter and Facebook being all pious and moral about the situation – this is something that can happen to anyone.”
