Stellenbosch student, Erin Van Rensburg, was brutally attacked and murdered in June 2009
Yesterday, 2oceansVibe reported that ex-Matie student, Jacobus Eksteen, was sentenced to thirty years in jail for the kidnapping, rape and murder of his friend’s little sister, Erin Van Rensburg in June 2009. The brutal murder shocked the small community of Stellenbosch for months while Eksteen remained in custody awaiting trial.
Now court documents from his sentencing at the Western Cape High Court yesterday have revealed the shocking and sickening plans Eksteen laid to entrap, rape and ultimately kill the 20-year old sister of his friend Byron.
According to the plea bargain documentation signed yesterday before Judge President John Hlope, Eksteen ordered two stun guns off the internet as part of his plan to brutally attack his friend’s sister, with whom he was dangerously obsessed.
Knowing her brother would be away from the apartment they shared, and knowing also that Erin’s boyfriend would not be present, Eksteen gained access to the flat under the false pretences of working on Byron’s computer. He planned to abduct Erin, then rape and kill her at another location, after confronting her. He had all the supplies he would need to execute his gruesome plan with him in a bag, including a pair of socks to gag the young woman, as well as a suitcase with wheels with which he planned to secretly dispose of her corpse near his family’s holiday home in Langebaan.
Luring her into the bedroom where he was waiting, Eksteen unsuccessfully tried to stun the girl, and a struggle ensued. Then he attempted to strangle her with his hands before ultimately choking her with a rope. He left the apartment with her body in his suitcase, planning to confront her about a relationship they had had. It was at his own apartment that he realised that she was dead, so he went forward with what would have been the second part of his sickening plot; to take the girl’s unconscious body to his family’s holiday home near Langebaan and kill her. He took her corpse to Elandsbaai, on the West Coast near Cape Town and buried her in a shallow grave in the dunes.
Her murderer, Jacobus Eksteen, was sentenced to thirty years in prison at the Western Cape High Court yesterday.
Based on suspicion of his involvement in her disappearance, investigators arrested Eksteen the very next day, and he led them to the location that Erin was buried at. He was immediately put in custody and was refused bail throughout the almost three year period between the vicious murder and yesterday’s plea bargain hearing. Part of that time was also due to extensive psychiatric evaluation of Eksteen. He will begin his thirty year sentence immediately.
