Oh, good, more things from the future to terrify me. Boston Dynamics, a Pentagon contractor, has broken the speed record for legged robots, with a new four-legged creation – the Cheetah, which can run at 29 kilometres an hour, far outpacing the 20 km/h record set by MIT in 1989.
Although it still lags behind the fastest human runners — and here we’re talking Usain Bolt and his amazing 45 km/h world record — the Cheetah’s creators at Boston Dynamics hope it will one day mimic the running speeds of an actual cheetah.
Says chief robotocist Alfred Rizzi:
While 18 mph is a good start, our goal is to get Cheetah running much faster and outdoors. We designed the treadmill to go over 50 mph, but we plan to get off the treadmill and into the field as soon as possible. We really want to understand the limits of what is possible for fast-moving robots.
The next step is to start hunting humans.
