It’s Demonstration Monday, folks. Two protests, complete with some dramatic tire burning, blockaded roads and accusations of corruption, have occurred in different areas of Cape Town since this morning.
Chaos erupted in Philippi earlier today when residents of the Sweet Home informal settlement shut down Duinefontein Road to protest about poor service delivery. The protestors were demanding electricity and housing on the land they currently occupy, and reportedly called local ward councillor, Thembinkosi Phupha, a corrupt liar.
Phupa had to be rushed off as the crowd grew increasingly agitated, burning tires and two portable toilets. The councillor’s response to the residents’ complaints was, “That’s […] private land. We can’t build houses on private land”. Indeed.
Meanwhile learners at Nelson Mandela High in Nyanga also staged a protest this morning at their school, demanding that the principal be removed.
