We had heard rumours about the virtual forest that had been created at Merchants On Long, for the launch of South Africa’s most sought-after high-end handbag range, Okapi. But we didn’t quite grasp the level of amazement that would beset us as we entered. This shop simply must be seen to be believed. Forming part of the Design Indaba, I urge you all to take a turn at Merchants on Long, 34 Long Street. The shop will only be in it’s current rainforest theme until Saturday evening.
PopYaCollar.co.za had this to say:
The Okapi bag launch at Merchants on Long Street took place on Tuesday night. The whole shop was turned into an enchanted forest with real trees and forest brush everywhere, with exotic models of birds perched on tree stumps. To add to the unique setting were hidden recorded forest sounds and smoke machines. Forest creator Otto de Jager created a setting that was simply mind-blowing!
The Okapi bags were magnificent – made in Cape Town using the finest of leathers from Ostrich to crocidile. Each hand bag is accessorised with small springbok horns creating a signature look. Well done to Hanneli Rupert for creating such a fun-filled evening. I loved the DJ who had some kind of military mask on and looked like a robot – he was fascinating.
Congratulations to Merchants on Long and to Okapi for an eye-opening launch.
And to the readers, please do yourselves a favour and stop by the shop – you will NOT be disappointed! You’ve literally NEVER seen anything like it!
