[Update:] Julius Malema has been expelled from the ANC. The National Disciplinary Committee announced its final decision on the fate of the ANC Youth League leader late this evening, declaring that his suspension from the party would be upheld. The decision can still be overturned by the National Disciplinary Committee of Appeal or reviewed by the ANC’s executive committee, but Malema’s political career is on decidedly shaky ground tonight.
[Earlier:] This evening the ANC Youth League waits with bated breath to hear whether the suspension of its leader, Julius Malema, from the ANC will be upheld. The ruling party has been expected to make a final pronouncement on Juju’s fate today, and while there had been no statement released yet by 19h00, all indications suggest that the announcement will still be made tonight.
Last year the ANC’s national discplinary committee (NDC) found Malema and five other youth league members guilty of sowing divisions within the ANC and bringing the party into disrepute. Juju, along with ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu, deputy president Ronald Lamola, treasurer general Pule Mabe, secretary general Sindiso Magaqa and deputy secretary general Kenetswe Mosenogi were all suspended for periods ranging from 18 months to five years, in Malema’s case.
The NDC met today to finalise its discussions on the sentences, which were suspended to allow the accused parties to submit evidence in mitigation.
Watch this space for an update on the NDC’s announcement.
