Just in time to co-incide with the 500th episode of “The Simpsons,” Matt Groening, the show’s creator, has been given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Simpsons aired its first episode on 19 December, 1989, so I’d say it was a long enough wait. There was also doughnuts.
This is not the first Simpsons star on the Walk of Fame though – the show itself was given one in 2005. The Simpsons is also the longest running comedy show in the US, now on the air for 23 years. The characters were named after his father Homer, mother Marge and sisters Lisa and Maggie. Instead of naming a character after himself, he chose Bart, an anagram for brat. The show was originally created as a series of short animations to fill gaps in The Tracey Ullman Show, whatever that was, but was soon fleshed out into a full series. It fast became one of Fox’s most popular shows.
It was also announced that the 57-year-old cartoonist has donated $500 000 to UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television. The artist and creator will be the namesake of the Matt Groening Chair in Animation at the School.
