Adele Schmadele, do you know who else got one?
Yes yes, we’ve spent the last few days rolling in the deep appreciation (sorry!) of the headline Grammy winners from last Sundays ceremony. Yes, Adele deserved every Grammy they threw at her, and sure, if you can look past Chris Brown’s past indiscretions (I can’t), maybe he deserved his gong as well, but take a look at the rest of the Grammy winners at the 54th Annual Awards, and you’ll see some unexpected surprises. Here are a few of our favourites:
Betty White
Veteran American comedian and the last Golden Girl, Betty White is a TV favourite in the States, with appearances everywhere these days from sitcom Hot in Cleveland to hosting Saturday Night Live. Last Sunday, she took down competition of the likes of Tina Fey’s memoir Bossypants to scoop the Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for her own memoir “If You Ask Me (And Of Course You Can’t). 90-years old and still going strong!
The Book of Mormon
If there was one show people were talking about on Broadway last year, it wasn’t Harry Potter in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, and nor was it the much derided, budget-busting flop Spider-Man musical Turn Off The Dark. No, it was the musical about Mormons written by the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and produced by super-producer Scott Rudin. Not only did it scoop nine of fourteen Tony Awards last year, it also took the Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album this year. It is well worth a listen to, but be warned, it is very very NSFW, and all the more awesome for it.
Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs passed away last year (in case you somehow missed it?!), cue much acclaim for his many achievements, and growing criticism of a man who was doubtless a troubled genius. The late Apple co-founder took home a Special Merit Award from the Grammy Trustees last Sunday, a prize given to “individuals who, during their careers in music, have made significant contributions, other than performance, to the field of recording.” No-one could dispute the profound effect Jobs and Apple have had on the music industry, and this award commemorates that. Somewhere in the iCloud, the newly digitized artificial consciousness of Steve Jobs is no doubt smirking.
Comedian, Louis CK
Finally, this guy might not be very well known outside of the States, unless you have a penchant for black-as-pitch dry comedy, as highlighted in his own comedy show on the US-based FX channel, Louie (highly highly recommended bee-tee-dubs). Know him or not, he is indisputably one of American comedy’s biggest names now, since he swept the likes of Weird Al Yankovic, Patton Oswalt and Kathy Griffin (Google them, please! For the sake of your soul!) off the board to win the Grammy for Best Comedy Album for Hilarious, which he recorded and released on tour last year.
There you have it, some of our favourite Grammy winners were to be found just a little further down the list. Now let’s all go back to wondering what the hell did Adele’s ex do to her to elicit an album filled with such swooning pain and regret! Ouch, girl needs some closure.
