Eight years after leaving his home country, this Congolese refugee can finally say his expectations of a better future in South Africa have been met. Fernando Brice Olivier Ogadi, 35, has just received a job offer in the profession he is qualified in – as a school maths teacher. His new employer noticed him in a parking lot giving free maths lessons.
The headmistress of Sunward Park High School in Boksburg, Ansie Peens, took note of Fernando’s talent and passion for teaching during a shopping trip. He had set up a blackboard in the parking lot where he worked as a car guard, and was giving maths lessons to passers by.
Ansie offered him a position as an assistant maths teacher at her school – and Fernando started the job on Monday. He’s also been given accommodation at the Sunward Park High.
“If somebody is so passionate about something that he’s prepared to leave his country for it, he deserves to be helped,” Peens said, adding, “Not everybody has the ability to explain maths, but his method is quite unique”. Full marks for attitude all round.
