The flying time-travelling locomotive should prove a special headache to the props department
Fresh off the multi-million dollar catastrophic failure that was Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, comes news that a musical version of Robert Zemeckis’ 1985 classic time travel trilogy, Back To The Future, might be in the works.
Zemeckis has apparently approached screen writer Bob Gale and composer Alan Silvestri to begin transferring the trilogy to the stage, though it is unknown if all the films will make it to Broadway in one piece, or a new version of the story will be created.
The three films grossed nearly US$1 billion worldwide, and while they made stars of Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, the real celebrity of the trilogy is this piece of junk:
Gull wing doors. Fibreglass fittings. Stainless steel chassis. Flux capacitor not included.
The much derided DeLorean DMC-12, which is something of a collectors’ item these days, mainly because they scarcely made 10 000 of them in the few years before the DeLorean company went bankrupt. Undoubtedly, this will be the star of whatever show they end up creating.
Muchlike the ill-fated Spider-man musical, this one is probably going to be effects heavy, which doesn’t bode well, budget-wise. I for one am super curious to see how they pull off the hoverboard chase across the future Hill Valley town square, on a broadway stage.
